Walford Road area Road Safety and Traffic Reduction scheme

Walford Road area Road Safety and Traffic Reduction scheme

Residents have just days to speak out against harmful road closures that will increase traffic and pollution at seven schools and seven nurseries.

If it goes ahead, Hackney Council's Walford Road closure scheme will tip three schools over the legal pollution limit, according to data contained in their CERC Air Quality and Traffic Model into the impacts of the scheme.

As well as displacing thousands of vehicles past street with a large amount of low cost and social housing, the councils own data shows the Walford Rd closures will:

- leave 3 schools illegally polluted (Grasmere, St Mary’s and Princess May)

- worsen pollution at 7 schools and 7 nurseries

- bring a 5% increase in NO2 at William Patten, a 4% increase at St Mary’s and a 3% increase at Grasmere.

- The air at these schools would have been getting cleaner because the buses have been retrofitted but the impact is so severe as to undo all the benefit of that and make the air dirtier than it was before.

- Church St, Albion Rd, Crossway, the High St and Matthias Rd are illegally polluted already. These are residential streets too and these plans will make it worse.

Please support other local families and protect young lungs by opposing the road closures now at bit.ly/n16schools

The deadline to respond is tomorrow and we urgently need parents to stand together to oppose this.

We are leading The Big Climate Fightback

Help us fight for the future of the planet by being one in a million people pledging to support tree planting on 30 November 2019.

Every tree counts

Trees are the ultimate multi-taskers, helping to combat the two environmental emergencies facing our planet: climate change and biodiversity loss.

They absorb carbon, fight flooding, reduce pollution, nurture wildlife and make landscapes more resilient.

Reducing our carbon emissions will never be enough. It’s vital we grow a UK-wide patchwork of trees and woods - not just by planting, but also through natural regeneration. The woods, hedges and green spaces we create buffer existing habitats, tackle climate change and reverse wildlife decline – all at the same time.

Stokey Energy

Stokey Energy

Stokey Energy has been established by a group of local residents, all of whom are determined to make a practical difference in the face of the climate emergency. We are experienced in sustainable energy policy, planning and regeneration, construction and solar panel installation, and design and communication. But it’s about much more than us. By setting up as a co-operative organisation, we hope to attract members with a wide range of talents and expertise, who will all be able to contribute.
